The paediatric hearing care is very important especially to allow kids to speak in a natural way; for the most serious deafness cases, we can use the hearing aid even for children from 3 to 6 months of life. In such circumstances, the hearing aid is preparatory to the surgery for the cochlear implant, which usually occurs around 2 years of life. The difficulties are various and too often the importance of the custom-made ear-bud is disregarded and moved to the background. When you are about to choose the correct kind of earpiece in the paediatric hearing care, you should discern between if it is for hearing loss or only a support for the cochlear implant. The spiral is an important link to the hearing aid and for this reason it has to meet the following requirements: - to be adjusted for the performance of the hearing device - to be aesthetically appealing but also functional - to be easily wearable - to be made of hypoallergenic material This is the reason why we usually choose silicone materials for infants and small children. The most used material is Microflex, which is a very soft silicone (30 shore), two-component, white or light pink, hot catalysing. For children older than 10 months, if the canal is already well developed, also Micropor 40 shore can be used, always upon the hearing care professional evaluation of the individual case. Micropor 40 shore is a hot catalysing silicone, pink as Microflex, but not as soft as Microflex is, however keeping the same characteristics of tightness and comfort. In order to customize the spiral for the smallest kids and make them aesthetically pleasing, we have a variety of themes, logos or even glitters to be applied. All these solutions make it easier, both for parents and for children, to accept the acoustic aid.
